The President of religious Affairs Prof. Mehmet Görmez received a delegation of Gambian Muslims headed by Muhammed Lickon Touray, president of the Gambia’s high Islamic Council.
President Görmez received a delegation of Muslims from the Gambia at Diyanet headquarters. “Let’s live where we live,” said President Görmez, showing complacency for the visit – we are all members of a community that makes us brothers. For long years, several obstacles and distance have come between us and in this new era we must strengthen our fraternity and supply the shortcomings that exist.
President Görmez remarked that the modern world offered an erroneous image of Africa, that Africa was not the continent of ignorance and poverty but, on the contrary, that of wealth, knowledge and wisdom. At the reception of the Gambian Muslims, President Görmez said the following:
“The greatest sins of the global world have been committed in Africa …”
The perception of Africa that prevails in the modern world is wrong. The image of Africa as the continent of poverty, misery and ignorance, as perceived in the modern world, is false. On the contrary, it is the continent of wealth, knowledge and wisdom. The perceptions generated on Africa were generated by the actions of the global powers. The global world committed the greatest sins in Africa with colonization, causing hunger and misery.
“The advent and expansion of the religion of Islam by Africa is from the beginning a miracle …”
The advent and expansion of the religion of Islam by Africa is from the beginning a miracle. In that story there are many lessons that all of humanity could learn. The first ‘ Medina ‘ of the envoy of Allah and of the Muslims was in Africa, it was Habesh. The Islamic civilization of Africa has exceptional peculiarities. There are still many things we can learn from that civilization. Anyway, in this new period we must compensate for the errors and shortcomings of 100 years with a very active cooperation.
“We need to be more careful so that the deviant ideologies that are besieging the Middle East region do not reach Africa …”
We must continually insist on our struggle in Africa against three great enemies, ignorance, discord and poverty. I know that our Gambia brothers have been fighting these three great enemies. I believe that the last few years have emerged a more subject that we should be vigilant about. We need to be more careful so that the deviant ideologies that are besieging the Middle East region do not reach Africa. The way to avoid this is by knowing and knowledge. The presence of a solid knowledge, religious institutions and great scholars are very important in this respect.
“A movement that committed evil against his own country on July 15 also went to his country under the guise of a kind group and took away his children …”
Evil can deprave countries and regions by adopting different appearances. The worst of the forms that the devil and the evil employ is that which is made with a semblance of kindness. All the movements of depravity were carried out under the name of reforms. A movement that committed evil against his own country on July 15 also went to his country under the guise of a good-natured group and took away his children. You must be informed of that. After many years it came to light that this movement was but an international organization in every rule. Especially our African brothers should not allow these things.
The President of the Gambian Islamic High Council Touray thanked President Görmez for the reception and conveyed the greeting of the Gambian Muslims.
The guest Touray stressed that the relations between Turkey and the Gambia were very strong. “We,” said President Touray–do not meet here as guests. Turkey has helped the Gambia a lot in many areas. We want to thank the Turkish people. “This visit is an honor for us.”
Touray asserted that Turkey was very important to Muslims around the world. “There are many things,” continued touray, that Muslims can learn from Turkey. Since Ottoman times, Turkey has done great things for Muslims. We want to be here to learn from you. “We want to be able to benefit from their experience and carry out their practices in the Gambia.”
“The Muslims of the Gambia have been very disturbed by the night of July 15th but, thanks to Allah, the trap failed …”
President Touray also expressed the sadness and concern they felt on the night of 15 July for what happened in Turkey. “We were very saddened on the night of July 15th.” We see Turkey as a stronghold of Islam. We were very worried about the night of July 15th and we felt a great sadness. But then we thanked Allah that the trap would fail. Trying to divide Islam into many small parts. We are a community. “We mustn’t allow it.”
President Touray called for help in various areas such as services, training and religious publications. President Görmez promised to help in all of this and to facilitate training in the Turkish students of Gambians.
